Still Think Social Media Sites Are a Fad?
Social media is here to stay and that is good news for small businesses. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn give business owners access to millions upon millions of people for virtually no cost. More importantly, these same sites can be leveraged for word-of-mouth marketing when used properly. Take a look at this quick video and let your mind consider the possibilities.
…
I have to admit that I didn’t really “get” social media until recently. I thought, “C’mon! Isn’t Facebook just a colossal waste of time where people share embarassing pictures from drunken escapades? And what’s the deal with Twitter? I don’t want to know that someone has an upset stomache from eating what may or may not have been chicken at some dirty spoon.”
The funny thing was that I know I wasn’t alone. This is a common misconception among busy people – especially business owners working like crazy to make their enterprises a success.
However, my perception changed. I started meeting local business people that were making a killing using social media. I studied what they were doing and applied it to my own business. I started seeing excellent results too.
The key is in understanding that social media is the way people interact these days. I don’t necessarily agree with it but it is reality and I learned long ago not to try to battle with reality.
The New Reality
My gut feeling is that social media – especially Facebook – is so powerful now that many local businesses could survive just using Facebook for their marketing. I know that is a bold statement but let’s look at the facts:
- The most valuable form of advertising is word-of-mouth and that happens mostly on social media sites these days
- Everything that you put on social media has a chance of going viral – that means that friends tell friends and so on
- These sites already have the most valuable commodity that local businesses are looking for (traffic or people) and it is easy to funnel some of this attention to your business when you have the right help.
Of course, we must remember that it is “social” media and people are there to be social – not to be sold to – so we do have to be respectful and do things the right way.
